When we find an Inn that's named after our favorite dog breed, with dog statues and knick knacks everywhere and two terriers in the front yard, we know we're going to like the place. The West Highland Inn in Ogunquit, Maine, is a charming place to stop. leave the car behind and take to the streets of this classic Maine town. Innkeepers Linda and Steve Williams and their Westies-in-residence, Ferguson and Clementine, welcome dog guests by prior arrangement. Along with rooms for dogs, they offer a very nice efficiency apartment that is ideal for families. We always find that this kind of lodging is less expensive in the long run, since you don't have to eat out three meals a day. Plus, you get to spend more time with your dog. The Inn's parking is off-street and close to the rooms, a real plus when you're lugging dog gear. After a nice sniff fest with her cousins, Maggie Mae, our little West Highlander, came with us on a search for lunch. About a block away, we found the very dog-friendly Bread & Roses Bakery. They had little bags of homemade dog biscuits on the counter, a clean water bowl on the sidewalk and a few outside tables where dog owners can enjoy their delicious take-out food with puppy by their side. A place to stay, a place to eat and pretty streets to stroll. What more could you ask of a dog destination? |
